The 30 yard container in Atlanta

The 30 yard takes up the same 22 by 7.5 feet of ground as the 20 — the extra volume is all height. That makes it the natural pick when a job makes a lot of bulky debris but the site has no more room: a multi-room renovation, an estate or property cleanout, an office or retail remodel with fixtures, shelving and partitions, light demolition, or a neighborhood or HOA cleanup. It fits many Atlanta driveways and commercial job sites, and it holds about nine pickup loads, or roughly 170 to 190 trash bags.

The sides are six feet high, so most of what goes in is carried or thrown rather than tipped from a wheelbarrow. Contractors with a crew do not mind; a homeowner working alone may prefer a 20 and a swap.

Big renovations, cleanouts and commercial remodels

Taking several rooms back to the studs fills a 30 in a hurry: the cabinets, the doors, the drywall, framing and flooring. Estate and property cleanouts land here too — furniture, mattresses and household junk — and so do office and retail remodels with fixtures and shelving, and light demolition with doors, windows and lumber.

Knocking a building down takes paperwork before it takes a dumpster. Georgia EPD says the federal asbestos rule requires a notification for every regulated demolition project, whether or not asbestos is present, filed ten working days ahead on EPD forms through GEOS, and all regulated asbestos-containing material has to be abated before demolition. Homes where four or fewer dwelling units are involved are exempt from the demolition notice unless they are part of a larger project. We will ask what the building is before we quote.

Weight, swaps and long jobs

About four to five tons — 8,000 to 10,000 pounds — is included. Tile, roofing shingles, wet yard waste, concrete and plaster can reach that before the box looks full, so separate dense material where you can. Jobs that run for weeks usually go on a rotation: we pull the full one and bring a replacement, so the site never waits. Contractors and property managers can ask about recurring service and job-site rotation programs.

Suitability

Is the 30 yard the right size for you?

Rough working figures. Weight, not volume, is what usually decides.

Choose the 30 yard for

  • Multi-room renovations
  • Estate, property and foreclosure cleanouts
  • Office and retail remodels — fixtures, shelving, partitions
  • Light demolition — doors, windows, lumber
  • Community and HOA cleanups

Pick a different size for

  • Mostly dirt, brick, tile, concrete or asphalt — a smaller box is more cost-efficient
  • Small cleanouts (you would pay for unused space)
  • Sites without room for a 22-foot container and the truck
  • Asbestos, paint, solvents, oil, tires, batteries or medical waste

Placing a 30 yard container on a metro Atlanta property

It needs a flat, stable spot about 22 feet long and 7.5 feet wide, about 60 feet of access for the truck, and at least 25 feet of clear space overhead — no low wires or branches. On your own driveway or lot in the City of Atlanta we found no City permit rule for a roll-off, and the City treats private property as the first choice. In a City of Atlanta street or right-of-way you need a Department of Transportation dumpster permit (City Code Sec. 138-61) — $20 plus $10 a day for up to 100 linear feet, for no more than six months, issued only where the container cannot be accommodated on private property. We found no Georgia DOT permit for a roll-off on a state route right-of-way. Other cities have their own rules — Sandy Springs keeps containers off public rights-of-way, Brookhaven allows a dumpster on a city street only with a city Dumpster Permit for up to 30 days, and some cities keep collection to themselves or a franchisee. Check your HOA too: covenants can cover containers in driveways. Protective boards can go under the container. Each city page covers its own code.

30 Yard Dumpster — questions we get asked

Is a 30 yard too big for a house?

For a normal cleanout, often yes — a whole-home cleanout is usually a 20. For a renovation that strips several rooms, or a whole estate, no — that volume arrives faster than people expect. We will tell you honestly which it is.

Can I do swaps on a 30 yard?

Yes. When the container is full we pick it up or bring a replacement, and contractors and property managers with ongoing work can set up a rotation at the start.

How much weight is included in a 30 yard?

Most rentals include about four to five tons, depending on the debris type and disposal requirements. A 30 full of tile, brick, dirt or concrete can go past that well before it reaches the fill line, so we estimate heavy loads with you before delivery.

Do I need a permit for a 30 yard?

On your own driveway or lot in the City of Atlanta we found no City permit rule for a roll-off. In a City street or right-of-way you need a Department of Transportation dumpster permit first (City Code Sec. 138-61) — $20 plus a daily fee, for up to six months, and only where the container cannot fit on private property. We found no Georgia DOT permit for a roll-off on a state route right-of-way, so on a state route the box stays on the property. Other cities have their own rules; each city page says what that code asks for.
