Residential Dumpster Rental across metro Atlanta

Homes around here vary enough that one container does not fit all of them. The tighter streets and short drives in Decatur and near Midtown want a 10 or a 15 and a driver who takes it slowly. The bigger suburban lots in Sandy Springs, Marietta or Johns Creek may have room for a 20 — and an HOA with its own covenants. The first thing we ask on the phone is what your driveway looks like.

Most residential jobs are one of three things: a cleanout (a garage, an attic, a basement, or a whole house before a move), a remodel (kitchen, bath, flooring, roof), or the yard — landscaping, a tree coming down, storm cleanup. Each wants a different size and a different talk about weight. The size comparison covers the numbers, the home cleanout guide covers the planning, and the phone call covers your job.

At a glance

What you get with residential dumpster rental

  • Flat-rate pricing quoted up front — delivery, pickup, disposal and the standard 7-day rental can all be in one number
  • Protective boards under the container to help protect newer or decorative driveways
  • Same-day or next-day delivery in many areas, depending on availability — call before noon
  • 10, 15 and 20 yard containers for most homes; 30 for whole-home cleanouts and renovations
  • A local team that knows when a street needs a permit
  • Extensions, swaps and early pickups by a quick call

What actually fills a residential container

Home cleanouts lead the way: furniture, mattresses, boxes, household junk, the contents of a garage, attic or basement. Kitchen and bath remodels are next — cabinets, tile, drywall, flooring. Then the outdoor jobs: shingles off a roof, an old deck or fence, a landscaping redo, storm limbs.

Regular pickup is not built for any of that. Inside the City of Atlanta, bulk collection has to be scheduled, it takes no more than eight cubic yards of junk or tree waste at the curb, and it takes no more than four cubic yards of building material a resident generated maintaining their own home — not counting roofing shingles, brick, plaster or concrete, which it does not take at all (City Code Sec. 130-40(c)(1)–(2)). The Department of Public Works is not allowed to collect anything generated by contractors; tree trimming, remodeling, new construction and roofing debris is the contractor's to remove (Sec. 130-40(c)(4)). That is what a residential roll-off is for.

Driveway placement, street rules and HOAs

On your own driveway in the City of Atlanta we found no City permit rule for a roll-off, and the City treats private property as the first choice. Protective boards can go under the container, and the driver sets it where you want to load it — on a flat, stable surface, clear of wires and branches. The street is another matter. City Code Sec. 138-61(b) makes it unlawful to place or keep a dumpster in the public right-of-way without first getting a dumpster permit from the Department of Transportation, and Sec. 138-61(d)(2) says no permit is issued unless the dumpster cannot be accommodated on private property. The fee is $20 plus $10 a day for up to 100 linear feet, a permit lasts no more than six months, and the container must show the provider's name and phone number and carry reflective sheeting on all four corners (Sec. 138-61(e), (d)(1), (f)). Each day of a violation is a separate offense, with fines of up to $1,000 a day (Sec. 138-61(i)–(j)).

A few more things. We found no Georgia DOT permit for placing a roll-off on a state route right-of-way, so on a state route the box stays on the property. HOA covenants can cover containers on your lot, so check yours before a longer rental. And the other cities differ: Sandy Springs keeps containers off public rights-of-way (Sec. 46-24(6)), Marietta needs a Public Works permit for a bulk container in the right-of-way (Sec. 5-8-040(A)(2)), Brookhaven allows a dumpster on a city street only with a city Dumpster Permit, for up to 30 days, and not on streets 24 feet wide or less (Sec. 7-196(b)), and Norcross limits a cleanout roll-off with no active building permit to four weeks a calendar year (Sec. 36-207(b)). Each city page says what that city's code asks for.

Residential dumpster rental — the Georgia specifics

Georgia keeps a short list of things out of every solid waste disposal facility in the state, and a mixed roll-off load ends up at one: lead-acid batteries, liquid waste in landfills, regulated quantities of hazardous waste, radioactive waste and PCB waste (Rule 391-3-4-.04(6)(b)). The rule cuts both ways — anyone who throws out a banned item and any facility that accepts it are in violation (Rule .04(6)(c)) — which is why we ask what is going in. Whole tires have been banned from Georgia landfills since 31 December 1994, and hauling tires needs a separate EPD tire carrier permit, so tires stay out of the box. Fridges, freezers and A/C units need their refrigerant recovered first under federal EPA rules (40 CFR 82.155). Georgia has no landfill ban on mattresses or electronics that we found. Where the leftovers go instead: inside the City of Atlanta there is no City collection program for household hazardous waste, and the City points residents to CHaRM, the Center for Hard to Recycle Materials, 1110 Hill St SE, by appointment only (404-600-6386), which takes hard-to-recycle items including household hazardous waste and tires. Latex paint is not hazardous but has to be dried out before it goes in the trash. The what can and cannot go in guide covers the rest.

Answers

Residential Dumpster Rental — your questions answered

Will the dumpster damage my driveway?

We take precautions to protect driveways and surfaces during delivery and pickup. Many customers put plywood boards under the container's wheels for extra protection, especially on decorative or newer driveways — ask when you book. Tell us before delivery if a surface worries you.

Can I put the dumpster on the street instead?

In the City of Atlanta, only with a Department of Transportation dumpster permit (City Code Sec. 138-61), and the City issues one only if the container cannot fit on private property. It is $20 plus $10 a day for up to 100 linear feet, with distance rules from bus stops, intersections, crosswalks and hydrants. On a state route we found no permit path for a roll-off. The driveway is always simpler.

Does my HOA have a say?

On the driveway, often yes. Covenants can cover containers on your lot, and we do not know your HOA's rules — check them before you book, especially for a longer rental.

Can I put old appliances in the dumpster?

Small appliances without refrigerant, usually yes. Fridges, freezers and A/C units, no: federal EPA rules require the refrigerant to be recovered before final processing (40 CFR 82.155), so keep them out of the box. Our junk removal crew can take them once the refrigerant is properly handled.

How long can I keep the container?

Most rentals include a standard 7-day period. If the job runs on, call and we can often extend it for an additional daily or weekly rate. If you finish early, call and we pick it up early.

Do you serve outside Atlanta?

Yes — sixteen more cities across Fulton, Cobb, DeKalb and Gwinnett counties, from Smyrna and College Park to Alpharetta and Lawrenceville. Each has its own page, and each says plainly what that city requires of a hauler and of a container in the street. Some cities run their own sanitation or a franchise, and there we check the City's rules before booking. We are licensed & insured.
